Aizaz Khan to replace injured Anshuman Rath as captain for Emerging Nations Cup!

All-rounder Aizaz Khan will lead the Hong Kong side to the Emerging Nations Cup as a hand injury forces Anshuman Rath out of contention. The left-handed opener broke his hand batting in the nets, and will be unable to join the squad as they head to Pakistan, where they will take on Pakistan, Bangladesh and UAE in Group B. Aizaz captained the Hong Kong side during the recent West Pacific and South China cups, and will now lead the side on an overseas tour for the first time.

Kinchit Shah will also miss the tour, as a result of work commitments in New York. Batsman Hamed Khan and left-arm spinner Aftab Hussain have been called up to the squad as replacements.

Having overseen the recent development tournaments (including the West Pacific and South China Cup’s), Head Coach Simon Cook will now focus on identifying the next group of U19’s players that are coming through. The U19’s will be taking part in the ICC Division 2 qualifier in Thailand, and he will be present to review and see first-hand what they are like in tournament play. Jawaid Iqbal has been appointed Interim Head Coach with Ashar Zaidi moving up from specialist coach to Assistant coach for this tour.

Simon Cook had the following to say about the tour: “The Emerging Nations tournament is another great platform for our players to show the full members what we are about. We had a good Asia Cup campaign and will be targeting the finals in Sri Lanka as a good result. This trip is not only a great opportunity for the players to learn and develop but also for Jawaid Iqbal who will be Head Coach for the first time in this campaign. We are always looking at ways of upskilling our staff in all areas, and to lead the team in a major event will help him to develop further as a coach.”

The team will depart from Hong Kong on 3rd December to Karachi, and will play their first group-stage game against Pakistan on 6th December at National Stadium Karachi. If they finish in the Top 2 of their group, they will then travel to Sri Lanka on the 10th for the Semis and Finals, and will arrive back in Hong Kong on the 17th of December 2018. All games have been awarded List-A status by the ACC, and the Full-Members will be fielding sides consisting of U-23s, with 4 overage players per squad.
