Anshuman Rath promoted to vice-captain for upcoming international programme

Hong Kong have elevated 19-year-old Anshuman Rath to the vice-captaincy ahead of a crucial programme of international cricket, where a place in the ICC Cricket World Cup Qualifiers will be at stake.

A home series against Nepal that includes two ICC World Cricket League fixtures will be the focal point of a busy period for the national team that will also include a preparation tour to Perth and a home ICC Intercontinental Cup fixture against Test nation Afghanistan.

The squads have been announced for all three events, with major change being Rath’s elevation taking over from Aizaz Khan.

“We have historically rotated round the role of vice-captain to allow us to identify potential future leaders,” coach Simon Cook said.

"Aizaz Khan performed the role well last year and the experience will enable him to be still be a leader within the group.”

"Anshie has become an integral part of the national team over the last 18 months and has grown not only as a player with his performances but as a really good tactician. Anshie brings different attributes to the role of vice captain and his already good relationship with Babar and the rest of the team aligned with his goal orientated focus will help the team continue the drive forward.”

The squads do contain some other notable changes, Nadeem Ahmed, Hong Kong’s most experienced spinner has taken time away to focus on his career outside of cricket.

"The squad for this series has been hard to select. I challenged our national squads to raise their standards and they have done that to the point now where selected 14 players is really difficult,” Cook said.

"Jhatha Subramanyan has come into the squad with a real chance of playing and taking the second sinners spot and we also see the return of Jamie Atkinson for the WCL games."
