Women’s ASEAN T20 Cup -HK v Thailand

Day 4 of the ASEAN T20 tournament started with a lot of rain. Once the team arrived at the ground the first game had been rained off already. The square looked very wet and the covers were still on. After the covers came off the match was delayed and the game was cut down to a 12 over game.  Mariko won the toss and elected to bowl first. Knowing Thailand from previous tournaments the team knew that the batters were going to come hard at us, having said this the girls were aware of this and handled it very well. Mehreen Yousaf opened the bowling with Mariko Hill, after coming back from an injury. The bowling was done in the area’s the coaches asked for, Shanzeen Shahzad was set to bowl at critical moments and was able to hold her nerve. Thailandfinished on a total of 85 with the loss of 4 wickets after 12 overs.

Going into the batting innings the girls had a good idea of where they wanted to score runs and how they were going to do this. Again wickets fell quickly for Hong Kong, a repeat of what had happened during the previous games. Mariko Hill and Kary Chan built a good partnership in the middle and added more runs to the scoreboard. After the departure of Mariko Hill it was all eyes on Kary Chan as she stepped up and kept the runs ticking on the board, the wickets fell around here but she kept her stance. Unfortunately in the last over she got out due to an unlucky run out. Kary Chan scored the most runs of the team getting 21 off 22 balls. Hong Kong only managed to get to 47 runs with the loss of 7 wickets.

Richard Waite had the following to say about the game: “Today was a great opportunity for the squad to compete against a strong well organised Thailand team and measure just where about our development players are in comparison.”
“It was pleasing to be able to get plenty of positives out of today’s game. We were very lively in the field and took all our chances.”
“Again we gave away to many easy extras causing Thailand to reach a good total.
Kary Chan again is showing great maturity batting in the middle order but just lacked the support from the other top 5 batters.”
“We showed greater intent with the bat and did not back down from the opposition.”

The next game will played against Malaysia on the 10th of March.
