2018 West Pacific Cup - Day 3

26日 10月

It was the hosts playing a double header on Day 3 of the 2018 West Pacific Cup - Hong Kong facing the 'A' side in the morning, and then PNG in the final group stage game in the afternoon.

Hong Kong secured their spot in the finals of the West Pacific Cup with a 43-run victory over Hong Kong 'A' in Game 5 of the T20 Tri-Series. After winning the toss, Aizaz elected to bat first, and HK got off to a quick start with 36 runs in the first 4 overs. Both openers fell soon after, but Babar Hayat (28) and vice-captain Kinchit Shah (29) kept the momentum going, before Waqas Khan (44* off 34 balls, 2 fours 2 sixes) delivered the finish. He was well supported by cameos from Scott McKechnie (15 from 8, 2 fours) and the skipper himself - Aizaz hitting 2 sixes in his 4 ball 14. Yasim Murtaza bowled excellently to take 3/18 in 4 overs, but HK raced away to 169/5.

HK 'A' had their moments in the chase. Simondeep Singh looked good again in his 36 (29 balls, 4 fours) and Zeeshan Ali kept the side in the hunt by hitting 46 from 37 balls (2 fours 2 sixes), but in the end they lacked the batting depth to finish the game off. The bowling and fielding was tight all around, and HK kept them to just 126/7 in their 20.

The afternoon match saw another comprehensive win for PNG over Hong Kong - CJ Amini Jnr. taking 1/14 and scoring 46* as the Barramundis registered a 6-wicket victory.

Hong Kong won the toss in the final Group Stage game of this tournament, and elected to bat first. They did not get off to the start they wanted - losing both Nizakat and Babar in the Powerplay. Nizakat fell to an excellent return catch by Jason Kila (leading wicket-taker of the tournament so far), while Babar was clean bowled -beaten by spin and lack of bounce- while trying to pull Charles Amini.

Kinchit Shah and Jamie Atkinson rebuilt, but the PNG bowling gave nothing away. When they both were dismissed, HK were 65/4 in 12.3 overs and in deep trouble. The in-form Waqas Khan played a fine innings, and looked good to score more than the 34 he did (25 balls, 1 fours, 3 six) when Jason Kila had him smartly run-out. Aizaz and Ehsan Khan then hit some big shots to take HK past 120, and they finished on 123/9 in 20 overs. Amini was excellent for PNG again, while Kila (2/22), Pokana (2/32) and skipper Asad Vala (1/2 in 2 overs) all turned in useful spells. The fielding was brilliant from PNG as well - a constant highlight of their performance so far this tournament.

No team had managed a successful runchase in the tournament so far, and for a moment it looked like PNG would fall into the same pattern. Tony Ura hit Aizaz Khan for a six third ball of the innings, but the skipper had him caught behind on the fourth. Ehsan Khan trapped Asad Vala for a duck, and even though Anthony Vare played some excellent shots (28 off 20, 3 fours, 1 six), his dismissal saw PNG in a bit of trouble at 44/3 after the powerplay.

Step up CJ Amini. After starring with the ball he starred with the bat - he put on 36 runs with Kipling Doriga to steady the innings, before finishing the game off in style with Chad Soper (20* off 17, 1 four 1 six). His 46* took just 36 balls (2 fours, 2 sixes), and won him the POTM award. Soper hit the winning runs on the final ball of the 17th.
