Chinese Tapeball Press Release
On Sunday the 24th of June, Cricket Hong Kong (CHK) will be holding the inaugural Chinese Tape Ball tournament at Lai Chi Kok Park, Mei Foo to help promote this form of Cricket amongst the local Chinese population.
Tape ball is a form of Cricket that developed in South Asian countries and is a highly popular form of the game all over South Asia. It is a simplified form with less of what can be seen as the complicated rules for beginners. CHK therefore feel it is an ideal entry level form of the game to use to attract local indigenous players and provides a simple competitive environment that is similar enough to the full game but does not provide the normal barriers of the rules and the need for a substantial amount of kit to play. This form simply requires a bat, a ball (Tennis ball bound in tape ie “Tapeball”) and an area similar in size to a football pitch although matches can be played almost anywhere as local rules can be applied to fit the environment.
The Chinese Tapeball tournament consists or five squads of 8 drawn up of players from all of the current Chinese teams CHK Dragons, CHK Pioneers, CCC Hung See and CCC Fung Wong, this covers both men’s and women’s teams so the day should be a great mix of what Chinese Cricket in Hong Kong has to offer.
Quotes:
Chris Pickett, CHK Chinese Cricket Operations Manager
“The Chinese Tapeball tournament promises to be a great day both showcasing the current talent we have within our Chinese set up across both men’s and women and a form of cricket that will we feel in its simplified form will appeal to new players from the local indigenous population.
Corn Wong, National Women’s Development player, member of CCC Fung Wong
“I am looking forward to this tournament. It is my first time to play it on a hard court football pitch as before I have only played with children during coaching sessions. This is my first official match and this is also my first time to play with so many Chinese players both men and women. It will be very exciting. I hope we can have more tournaments like this in the future that mix both the men and the women as we can learn a lot from each other.”
Ka U Lynn, CHK Dragons and CCC Hung See player
“I am very happy and excited to be involved in the first ever Chinese Tapeball tournament, especially as I am one of the team captains.
I believe this is a great opportunity for Chinese youngsters to learn cricket and hopefully many more will continue playing the game in the future.
Damien Yee, CHK Dragons former captain and CHK Pioneers player
Many people don’t know there are many different forms of cricket. Tapeball is fun and fast with a soft ball that swings as it moves through the air. Many elite cricketers grew up playing Tapeball cricket on the streets, in their homes or on the beach. If they suddenly decide to play a game with friends it is likely to be Tapeball. I cannot wait to play in this tournament and relive my childhood memories and introduce the game to the Chinese cricket community
