CHK Joint-U Tapeball Cricket Sixes 2020-21 (Season 2)
Date – 15th May 2021
Venue – Gin Drinkers Bay (Upper Ground)
The 2019-20 edition of the CHK Joint U Tapeball Cricket Sixes were scrapped due to COVID-19, which meant we had a gap of more than 2 years since the inaugural edition of this tournament.
In this edition, we had student-only teams from 6 universities take part:
City University of Hong Kong (香港城市大學) (CityU)
The Chinese University of Hong Kong (香港中文大學) (CUHK)
The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (香港理工大學) (PolyU)
The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (香港科技大學) (HKUST)
The University of Hong Kong (香港大學) (HKU)
Hang Seng University of Hong Kong (香港恒生大學) (HSUHK)
CityU, HKUST, PolyU and CUHK were all playing in their 2nd tournament while HKU and HSUHK were making their first appearances. This was also HSUHK’s first ever cricket tournament of any sort – a historic moment for the newest university in Hong Kong!
The defending champions CUHK were drawn into Group A alongside the two new teams – HSUHK and HKU – while last season’s runners up PolyU were drawn into Group B with CityU and HKUST. All three Group A matches were played first, followed by Group B and then the play-offs and the Final.
HKU started the day with an upset over the defending champions, beating CUHK by 34 runs! CUHK bounced back to beat HSUK by 5 wickets, but HKU then beat HSUHK by 6 wickets to book their spot in the Final!
In Group B, CityU put on an impressive display, beating HKUST and PolyU comfortably in back-to-back matches to take the 2nd spot in the Final. HKUST then chased down 96 in just 3 overs against PolyU to finish in 2nd place, thereby progressing to the 3rd/4th play-off!
PolyU ended their day on a positive note, scoring a record 152 against HSUHK in the 5th/6th playoff – the highest team score ever in the Joint U Sixes! CUHK and HKUST then played out a last-ball thriller in the 3rd/4th play-off, with HKUST winning by just 4 runs, setting the stage for an exciting final!
CityU won the toss and elected to bat, and scored 84/4 in their 5 overs, mainly thanks to skipper Muhammad Ahmad’s 42 off just 9 balls! All his runs came in sixes, as he hit 7 of them – more than all the other players in the game combined! Muhammad Aryan of HKU conceded just 6 runs in his over, while his skipper Saksham Bhalothia effected 3 runouts as keeper. They both then scored 22 and 20* respectively in the chase, but HKU would fall just short of the target. CityU bowled and fielded well to keep HKU to just 72/5, winning the final by 12 runs and becoming the champions of the 2nd edition of the Joint U Sixes!
The standout performers of the tournament were Hassan Ahmed of HSUHK (Highest MVP Points – 16.18 overall), Kaleb ben Naveed of PolyU (Leading runscorer – 81 runs off 24 balls), Ifthikar Hussain of CityU (Leading wicket-taker, 5 wickets for 32 runs) and Muhammad Ahmad (CityU) and Rayan Mateen Qureshi (HKU) with 4 catches each.
