The HKCA Women’s T20 Cup has showcased some outstanding individual talents this season. None more so than CCC Fung Wong vice-captain Kary Chan, who after eight rounds, has achieved the highest score of 132 not out and currently holds the joint lead on the overall runs scorers tally at an average of 84.
When talking about her recent achievements, Kary felt a bit shy and said, “I didn’t expect that I would achieve the highest score in the match against USRC Women. I just kept encouraging myself to unleash the power to bat well in the match.”
This is also what I always ask of myself each match. I was very lucky in the match against USRC Women on the day. I could get rid of the pressure and keep my fitness level good enough to get the highest score.”
As a full time student majoring in Sport and Recreation studies in the College of International Education of Hong Kong Baptist University, she finds her way to strike for the balance between study and practice. Concurrently playing for the first domestic full chinese women’s team CCC Fung Wong and for Hong Kong in international cricket, Kary takes a very busy schedule on practice day from early morning until late night. And it all comes down to family support.
“My family didn’t know much about the sport of cricket when I just started playing,” she said.
“However, they thought that doing exercise is good for health. Then they discovered that I felt very happy and had a lot of positive improvement of different aspects of my life such as time management after playing cricket.”
“Somehow, my dad drives me to the ground for practice and pick me up afterwards when I feel extremely tired on the busy day. So the family support is very important to me.”
Kary started playing cricket at 14 when a Hong Kong coach visited her secondary school and organised the demonstration to promote the sport. Following that she was selected to train in the U19 development squad. Now she has represented Hong Kong to play in international cricket.
Kary has represented Hong Kong seven times in international cricket tournaments. When asked what made her attracted to the sport, she explained, “In the first-ever moment for representing Hong Kong as one of the U19 players, I experienced a very competitive match in the tour, which truly excited me as what other sport gave me.”
“This sport also requires the unity of 11 players over the ground and an agreed and effective strategic plan to play. All these made me fond of cricket.”
As for her goals in cricket?
“I wish to have an opportunity to go overseas and play for the domestic cricket clubs in either Australia, New Zealand or the Britain,” she said.
I want to receive training from overseas and capture the experience from the exchange programmes and leagues held by the clubs.”
With season coming to a close, Kary knows it won’t be easy to retain her place as the top batter.
“In Hong Kong, we have a lot of good women’s cricketers batting very well. Shanzeen Shahzad also has a very high score close to mine. If she bats well in next game against my team, she may have a higher chance to get the place. So let’s see how we play in the game this Sunday.”
