UAE Tour squad announcement

17日 11月

Hong Kong have announced squads for the upcoming tour of the United Arab Emirates, which will include the final round of the ICC Intercontinental Cup and ICC World Cricket League Championship against Papua New Guinea.

The squad will also remain in the UAE for a three-game One Day series against Oman.

After a victory and a washout against Nepal in the penultimate round of the WCLC, Hong Kong require one win from their remaining two games against PNG to secure a place in the ICC Cricket World Cup qualifiers to be held in March next year.

The WCLC squad contains two additions from the recent Nepal series, with left-arm spinner Nadeem Ahmed back in the side and Scott McKechnie named in a Hong Kong squad for the first time.

“We’ve got a bigger pool of players, with Scott (Mckechnie), Jamie (Atkinson) and Nadeem (Ahmed) cleared from their work commitments and available for WCL, which also helps from a workload point of view,” coach Simon Cook said.

"The tour includes seven limited overs games and one four day match so there’s a lot of cricket for us to get through.”

“Scott brings a lot of experience of playing high level cricket in England and brings us options with his wicket-keeping and balancing the team as well as competition for places."

“This is as close as we can get to the strongest squad we can put out available.”

Hong Kong currently sit fourth on the points table on 14 points, four behind leaders The Netherlands, which still leaves the door ajar for Hong Kong to win the World Cricket League with two victories over the second-placed PNG.

“It’s nice to have your strongest squad out for the most important fixtures,” Cook said.

"We played PNG last year in an ODI series at home and did well so we will have confidence coming into the game.”

"But they’re in second position and have a lot riding on the games chasing that top spot so the pressure is on all the teams in the top four or five."

Prior to the WCLC, Hong Kong will be looking for redemption in the Intercontinental Cup following a huge defeat to front-runners Afghanistan at home in the previous round.

Cook sees the final round against PNG as a huge opportunity to prove Hong Kong’s ability in four-day cricket.

“We knew Afghanistan was going to be tough so the PNG game is a chance to reassert where we are as a four day side among the next group of Associates,” Cook said.

"So we need to put our markers down in the sand and say we are the next best multi-day team.”

The squad depart for the UAE on Tuesday and will return on the 15th of December.
