A solid all-round display saw the Kowloon Cricket Club open their CHK Premier League T20 campaign with a win, handing United Services Recreation Club their second consecutive loss of the competition. KCC’s national squad representatives fired at the top of the innings, setting the platform for their eventual score of 171/9, before the bowling attack ensured that USRC weren’t able to capitalize on a strong start of their own.

Having won the toss and elected to bat first, Nizakat Khan (27 off 13) and Aizaz Khan (31 off 17) got the hosts off to a flying start, bring up the fifty in just four overs. They both were dismissed shortly after by left-arm spinner Shan Raja, but at the end of the powerplay KCC were sitting pretty at 60/2.

Jamie Atkinson built on his openers good work, hitting 46 off just 34 balls, and compiling steady partnerships with Simandeep Singh and Waqas Barkat. He was the fourth man dismissed, bowled off the inside edge by young left-arm spinner Ehsan Muhammad, and the score read 135 in the 16th over. This triggered a bit of a middle order collapse – Ehsan Muhammad picking up his third wicket in the same over, and left arm seamer Muhayam Zaman picking up 3 wickets towards the back end of the innings, as KCC lost 6 wickets for 36 runs in the last 4.3 overs. A good recovery by USRC from 50/0 in 3.5, but they still had their work cut out for them in the chase.

Skhawat Ali and Umar Muhammad responded in a positive manner, hitting three 4s and four 6s to bring up a 50-run partnership inside the powerplay. But they found run-scoring much tougher once the field was spread out, and managed only 20 runs off the next four overs, delivered by Aizaz Khan and Dan Pascoe. This pressure eventually yielded a wicket for KCC, with Jamie Atkinson holding a sharp catch standing up to the stumps to Atheeq Iqbal – Umar Mohammad dismissed for 35, USRC 77/1 in 11 overs.

From there the visitors struggled to claw their way back into the game. Aizaz Khan (3 overs for 16) and Dan Pascoe (4 overs for 17) tightened the screws while Waqas Barkat (4 overs, 3/27) and Jason Davidson (4 overs, 2/28) struck at regular intervals to halt USRC’s charge. Overs 12 to 18 yielded just 38 runs for the loss of 4 more wickets, and it took an 8-ball cameo from Zakir Hayat – who hit three consecutive sixes off Atheeq Iqbal in the 19th over – to narrow the margin of defeat. Zakir was dismissed off the final ball of the innings for 25, and USRC ended on 143/7. A marked improvement on their batting effort from their first game, but still not enough to register their first Premier League win.

With that, KCC have gotten their season underway in flying fashion. A replay of this match can be found on YouTube, or for CricHQ premium fans, on the scorecard linked above.
