Cricket is back in Hong Kong, as the 2020-21 domestic season kicks off this weekend with a Sunday League game between the HKCC Optimists and Vagabonds CC!
Sunday League cricket is the 2nd highest level of club cricket in Hong Kong. It’s where the best amateurs in HK can rub shoulders with seasoned international cricketers, and where the brightest upcoming talent hone their skills. The league dates back to 1973/74, with the current two-division structure first brought in for the 2015-16 season. The six teams in each division play two rounds of 50-over cricket, with matches played on turf wickets as much as possible.
HKCC Optimists and Vagabonds CC have both been participating in the Sunday League since its inception, and currently find themselves in Division 2. Vagabonds CC will be captained by former HK International player Sher Lama -the first man of Nepali origin to ever play ODI cricket – who will be making a comeback to HK league cricket after a 7 year hiatus, while the HKCC Optimists will be captained by club stalwart Hamish Dickie, who had this to say on the eve of the game:
“The Optimists are incredibly excited to open the cricket season at HKCC this weekend. It has been an incredibly tough year for everyone and we hope cricket can be a vehicle to give people in Hong Kong some semblance of normality back in their lives. The Optimists have a strong squad this season with a number of experienced additions. We are confident we will compete in each and every game to chase a title which has eluded us over the past few years.“
This match will be played following the CHK Covid-19 Match Guidelines, and will broadcast live and for free on YouTube via CricHQ’s My Action Replay system. For a full list of this season's Sunday League fixtures, check out our CricHQ page.
