Sunday saw the first game in a 3 game Cricket Hong Kong Challenge series between CHK Dragons and Cricket Hong Kong Women's National Squad. The series will see the teams go head to head in 3 different formats; Sixes, T20 and a One day 35 over.
The game was played during the Hong Kong World Sixes competition at Kowloon Cricket Club. This was an opportunity for all players involved to showcase their cricketing skills on the big stage, streamed live across the globe.
Mariko Hill, CHK Women's captain, won the toss and elected to field.
Batting first the Dragons got off to a slow start because of a strong over bowled from Kary Chan (0-9). Dragons captain Eddy Ang then started to find the middle of the bat and upped the run rate. When Ang retired on 31 the score was 48. Nigel Sun then carried on where Ang left off, scoring 17 off 6 balls to give the CHK Dragons a very competitive score of 68 for 2 off 5 overs.
Hong Kong Women's innings got off to a poor start losing the big wicket of Mariko Hill (0) bowled in the opening over. From there CHK Dragons bowled extremely well and didn’t let the Hong Kong Women back in the game. Boundaries were hard to come by, Eddy Ang (1-7) Nigel Sun (1-5) and Ka-U Lynn(1-7) were on top form with the ball and only a slight flourish from Chan Sau Ha (10) in the last over gave Hong Kong Women something to cheer. Hong Kong Women finished on a total 35 for 5 off 5 overs.
Congratulations to CHK Dragons who go 1-0 in the 3 match series. The next fixture will be played over a T20 format in the New Year.
Looking ahead, Hong Kong Women travel to Mumbai, India on 12th November for a training camp at MIG Cricket Club. The squad will then travel direct to Bangkok, Thailand to compete in ICC Women's T20 World Cup, Asia Region Qualifiers.
CHK Dragons have two very important Sunday Elite B league fixtures in November. They take on HKCC Optimists at Hong Kong Cricket Club on Sunday 5th November and then KCC Infidels at Kowloon Cricket Club on Sunday 26th November. The Dragons are in confident mood having started the season well and would love to do the double over HKCC Optimists who they beat in their last fixture.
Women's Head Coach Richard Waite said:
"This is an extremely exciting time for Chinese and Women's cricket. Cricket Hong Kong has established some very strong links with local Chinese schools which is giving more children the opportunity to play cricket.
Women's Cricket in the New Year will see the start of the Under 13, Under 15 and Under 19 development program giving us an opportunity to identify the next crop of players."
