Iconic cricket brand Woodworm have taken over the ownership for the upcoming Hong Kong T20 Blitz of Island Warriors, effective immediately. The team has officially now been renamed the Woodworm Warriors.
Woodworm, sponsors of several leading players around the world including England’s Ian Bell and Tim Bresnan, have been long term supporters of cricket in Hong Kong and jumped at the opportunity to become involved in the Hong Kong T20 Blitz after the original owners were forced to withdraw.
Simon Millington, CEO of Woodworm, was delighted to step in.
“When I heard there was an opportunity to take over The Warriors I jumped at the chance. There has been a real buzz around the cricketing community both in Hong Kong and indeed globally for the T20 Blitz so to have our company involved is fantastic for us,” Millington said.
The Woodworm Warriors squad contains some of Hong Kong’s leading players including Jamie Atkinson, Tanwir Afzal and spinner Nadeem Ahmed and with some exciting overseas players due to be announced shortly it promises to be a strong outfit.
Although the situation was an unexpected one, HKCA Marketing and Commercial Director Max Abbott was pleased Woodworm were in a position to quickly take the reins.
“To have a brand as strong as Woodworm involved is yet another feather in the cap of this new competition,” Abbott said.
“They have a deep connection with cricket in Hong Kong and are passionate about seeing it succeed so I have absolutely no doubt they will be a competitive force,”
“Of course their connections in the cricket community worldwide will I’m sure be a useful commodity in helping this event gain exposure around the globe.”
The Warriors play their opening match of the tournament on May 28 against the GII Lantau Galaxy Riders.
