Another first for Hong Kong - Local Club Craigengower CC visit Rome to play a Vatican XI

31 October 2019

Craigengower are one of only a handful of sides to have had the good fortune to meet a Vatican XI on the cricket field.

Led by immediate past CHK President Rodney Miles - the tour was as uplifting as it was an opportunity to further promote the game. The enthusiasm and skills of the Vatican XI, known as the St Peter's Cricket Club, was very exciting for all involved.

Former England Captain, past MCC President and Current Chair of the MCC World Development Committee, Mike Gatting was the Craigengower Manager of Games and as an Umpire. Former Hong Kong Skipper and previous CEO of Somerset CCC, Peter Anderson also assisted.

The tour was facilitated with the goodwill of Roma Capennelle Cricket Club who generally provided their ground and facilities. Craigengower played two fixtures at the Roma Capannelle Ground during the tour with a very successful outcome for the Vatican XI.

Craigengower travel all over the world helping to raise the profile of the game, particularly in unusual places, and in so doing help promote "spirit of cricket" and Hong Kong.

In recent years, Craigengower has been to Tehran, Istanbul, Java, Moscow, Myanmar, Ulaanbaator, Bhutan and Havana to mention a few.

Since the creation of the Braidwood Centre for Cricket Development, Craigengower has been at the core of helping Cricket HK develop the local game. No surprise with origins going way back to the Club's founding in 1894, as a place to teach school kids to play cricket, with race, colour or creed no barrier.
