Jade Jets vs Bauhinia Stars
Jade Jets 162/9 in 35 overs (Pull To 50, Katy Gibbons 26, Alison Siu 7-0-23-2, Mehreen Yousaf 7-0-29-2) beat Bauhinia Stars 90 a/o in 29.3 overs (Kary Chan 26, Betty Chan 7-1-16-4, Jasmine Titmuss 6-3-6-2) by 72 runs
This weekend also saw the launch of the revamped Women’s Premier League, with the Jade Jets and Bauhinia Stars facing off in the first of 3 matches. The Stars won the toss on a warm sunny morning at HKCC and sent the Jets in to bat first. Kary’s decision paid dividends immediately, with Mehreen Yousaf dismissing both Lemon Cheung and Sukhjit Gill inside the first 6 overs. Maryam Bibi then added the two big wickets of Mariko Hill and Keenu Gill, and after 15 overs overs the Jets were precariously poised at 78/4. However, their skipper Pull To was still out there, batting well on 34 off 39, and she would go on to bring up her 50 in the 23rd over, helping take the Jets past 100 in the process. She was dismissed a few balls after reaching the milestone, caught at fly slip off Alison Siu, and the Jets entered the final 10 overs with 108 runs on the board. Jasmine Titmuss was joined by Katy Gibbons, and the pair added another 37 runs in 42 balls – Katy finding the fence on 5 occasions during her innings of 26. There were a couple of run-outs towards the end of the innings at the Jets pushed for quick runs, and Jen Davies picked up two sharp stumpings as well, with the girls in blue finishing their 35 overs on a competitive 162/9.
In response, the Stars innings never got off the block. Iqra Sahar struck early with her outswingers to dismiss Ruchitha Venkatesh, while Jasmine Titmuss gave nothing away at the other end. Betty Chan -one of HK’s best spin bowlers- came on first change and kept the pressure on, as the Stars struggled to lift their run rate above 3 RPO. Emma Lai was dismissed trying to take the attack to Betty, and Shanzeen Shahzad was run-out trying to steal a quick run. After 13 overs the Stars were 30/3, and they never really threatened to chase down the score from there on in. Kary Chan played a bright innings of 26 from 22, but lacked partners at the other end, as Betty Chan worked her way through the lineup to finish with exceptional figures of 4/16 in her 7 overs. Only two batters crossed double digits, and Kary hit 5 of the 6 boundaries in the Stars innings, as the girls in pink were bowled out for just 90 in 29.3 overs. Pull To followed up her fine performance with the bat with an exceptional one in the field, taking 5 catches in the inner circle! With this win, the Jade Jets go 1-0 up in the series, with the next game set to be played on November 15th at Mission Road!
